Director of Adult Education Programs

Peninsula School of Art is seeking an ambitious and visionary Director of Adult Education Programs to lead a comprehensive adult education program serving creative adults, arts professionals, and experienced avocational artists. The Director will be responsible for managing existing programs, assessing their effectiveness, and creating new programs in keeping with the mission and goals of Peninsula School of Art. The Director will recruit faculty and develop relationships with the many local, regional, and national organizations that represent a broad range of opportunities to reach new constituencies and consumers, both on campus and through media, virtual, and off-site opportunities.

The Director of Adult Education Programs reports to the Executive Director and works closely with the Director of Marketing and Exhibitions, and the Youth and Community Programs Coordinator to plan and execute Peninsula School of Art programs.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Understand the unique nature of adult and continuing educational needs, from the professional development of artists to the explorations of amateurs and novices
  • Create the vision and develop a strategic, entrepreneurial, and focused plan for adult and continuing education opportunities
  • Research and recruit faculty that meet organizational standards for excellence
  • Develop and implement framework for evaluating success of these educational offerings
  • Cultivate and grow Peninsula School of Art’s relationships with a local, regional, and national networks of artists, curators, and arts organizations as well as schools, galleries, supporters, and other creative partners
  • Utilize Peninsula School of Art’s internal assets — artistic and educational leadership, gallery, and festival — as well as support operations (marketing, scheduling, communications) to promote and grow the program
  • Manage correspondence and contracts with artists and other consultants or vendors related to the programs
  • Prepare content for workshop catalogs
  • Collaborate with Executive Director to determine capital improvements, such as equipment and inventory purchases and annual supply costs associated with maintaining and growing the potential of each department’s program offerings
  • Work with Executive Director and Director of Marketing to develop and implement tactics for marketing by department and by workshop, in conjunction with the School’s marketing objectives and organizational message
  • Stay abreast of and continually assess current trends in contemporary art programming
  • Develop and manage budgets for programs
  • Due to the nature of programs, some evening and weekend work is required
  • Participate as needed in programs outside traditional work hours, including fundraising events
  • Understand the benefits, as well as the limitations, of working in a non-profit environment in which there are competing demands for resources
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s, and preferably a Master’s degree, in a field of education or the arts, or a combination of a degree in a field related to the position, i.e. arts or education administration, marketing, public relations or communications
  • Minimum of three years of experience with work and leadership experience in education or program development in an arts, education or cultural institution
  • Self motivated, articulate and highly organized
  • Proficiency in Microsoft programs; knowledge of Photoshop is desirable and graphic design skills a plus;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Friendly, engaging, and professional demeanor; ability to work as a team member and cooperate with peers
  • Knowledge of creative fields and the artistic community
Salary & Benefits:
  • Salary is commensurate with experience.

2014 Arts Administration Internship

For over 45 years, the Peninsula School of Art, in Door County, Wisconsin has been a destination for education in the visual arts. Over 150 workshops are offered for artists of all levels and ages. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to learn more about what goes on behind the scenes at a busy and vibrant non-profit arts school and to gain valuable, practical skills in program management, customer service, studio management, event planning, hospitality, and arts administration.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting the staff in the day-to-day management of the school
  • Setting up and maintaining studios
  • Answering phones and general inquiries
  • Assisting visitors
  • Processing student registrations
  • Selling special event tickets
  • Assisting in event set up and coordination

Successful candidates should be detail-oriented and well-organized with strong written and verbal communication skills. Strong computer skills are required, including knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel. Knowledge of the visual arts is beneficial.

  • Dates of 2014 Internship: Flexible, June 1 to August 27 preferred. Specific start and end dates will be arranged prior to hiring.
  • Work schedule: A work schedule will be developed upon hiring.  Interns work approximately 30 hours per week and will be expected to work more during Peninsula School of Art summer events. Some evening and weekend hours required.
  • Compensation: $11/hour, plus one art class
